Dear San Diego Poetry Annual Community,

Join us for a book reading and signing with local author Leah Ollman to celebrate her new publication, Ensnaring the Moment: On the Intersection of Poetry and Photography. Ollman will be in conversation with renowned poet Rae Armantrout, professor emerita at UC San Diego. This event is FREE with RSVP—click here.

This program is presented in conjunction with the Museum of Contemporary Art’s special exhibition, Alex Katz: Theatre and Dance. Like Katz’s paintings, the poems collected in Ensnaring the Moment explore transitory moments captured in word and image.

July 1-August 15th, Poetry Contest! SDPA is proud to partner with International Memoir Writers Association and SD Writers Festival to co-sponsor the new Poetry component of their acclaimed Memoir Showcase. $5/poem reading fee goes to subsidize production costs. Previously published poems accepted – read the full submission guidelines here. Now in its 11th year, the 2026 showcase will be performed on November 14 at 7 p.m. PT at the Garfield Theater in La Jolla.

2 Winning Showcase writers will work with a coach to refine their piece for performance and have an opportunity to meet for a roundtable read with their professional actors and show directors. Winning works along with 3 additional runners up will also be published in the 2026 Shaking the Tree Anthology.

June 29, 2-4:00pm, Poets at the Grove/SDPA combination reading in Balboa Park (See map below). All poets are featured at The Grove. Readings at The Grove are open to all poets and is a safe place to share your work and enjoy a peaceful corner of our beloved Balboa Park. There’s no sign-up sheet, no microphone, no cover charge, no secret password. Connect to the earth mother and the poetry community to enjoy the most organic reading in all the land! We don’t have a wine bar, espresso bar, or personal pizzas, but we offer a lot of heart and soul. All appreciators are welcome. It’s a good idea to bring more than one poem, as we’ll each have at least three or more turns to read. As always, we sit in a circle, and take turns reading one poem each. The Grove is accessible to all.

From 5-7 pm at Inspirations Gallery • Liberty Station Barracks 16, Suite 204, San Diego Writers, Ink and the San Diego Poetry Annual invite you to an afternoon of poetry as poets featured in the 2021-22 San Diego Poetry Annual take to the Open Mic to read their poems. The afternoon will also feature a tribute to San Diego poet and long-time and much-loved leader in the San Diego literary community, Seretta Martin. Seretta’s published work comprises poems in many styles and she is especially noted for her gifts of haiku, both the form itself as well as promotion and celebration of the art. The evening starts with nosh and mingling then a panel discussion led by lifelong surfer and executive editor of the San Diego Poetry Annual, Michael Klam. Panelists are author and lifelong surfer, artist, and contributing writer at The Surfer’s Journal, Cher Pendarvis, surf journalist Scott Bass, classical pianist/surfer Jeeyoon Kim, and poet/visual artist Ted Washington. Open mic follows the panel. All poets and writers of any genre are invited to share their take on the influence and inspiration they draw from the sea. Open mic readers will share one poem (or two short ones) or one piece of short prose each.
